Our History

We’re proud to welcome you to one of the most unique hotels in Dallas Fort Worth. The W.T. Waggoner Building was opened on March 8, 1920, and was once one of the tallest in the State of Texas and the Southwest. It was originally built for William Thomas Waggoner, owner of Texas’ famous Waggoner Ranch, which, today, is the largest ranch in Texas under one fence (535,000 acres).

The neo-classical architecture of the W.T. Waggoner Building is reminiscent of the famed Equitable Building in New York City, and its 20 storeys are made up of marble, white brick, and terracotta. The building’s U-shape floor plan allows for abundant natural light, and many of the original, ornate features remain.

When the building first opened, the National Bank of Commerce occupied the lobby and remained until 1957 throughout it’s merger to become the Continental National Bank. On July 10, 1979, the W.T. Waggoner Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1985 it underwent restoration to become home to XTO Energy until 2018.

In 2019, Northland Properties acquired the building and announced plans to open the 245-room Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel.

Robert Sturns, director of economic development for the City of Fort Worth, says he is thrilled with Northland’s commitment to preserving the iconic building, “This project celebrates Fort Worth’s past while still supporting the current and future growth of downtown, and we look forward to the Sandman Signature Hotel being part of our growing community.”
